  4.     The world's wealthiest woman shows up at the impoverished
  5. village of her birth and offers improvements beyond imagination,
  6. plus a fortune for each man, woman and child. There is one
  7. catch: the townspeople must murder their popular mayor-elect.
  8. In his youth he seduced and abandoned a poor girl so he could
  9. marry a little money. Now old and rich, she wants vengeance. She
  10. believes everyone has a price, and she is right. Friedrich
  11. Durrenmatt's morality play THE VISIT seemed shockingly cynical
  12. when the Lunts brought it to Broadway in the '50s. In a sad
  13. measure of the disillusioning years since, it now triumphs as
  14. a comedy. Harris Yulin is fine as the betrayer and Jane
  15. Alexander dazzling as the raddled revenger. But the real star
  16. is Alexander's husband Edwin Sherin, who has directed in high
  17. Austro-German style, most of the characters sporting masks and
  18. sounding like puppets. He controls the tone unerringly. The
  19. simpler and more childlike the telling, the more piercing the
  20. satire gets in Broadway's finest revival of the past half-dozen
  21. years.
